So, St. Thomas Episcopal Church, where we are staying in Dubois, is pretty cool. They run a thrift store next to the church called The Opportunity Shop. In addition to providing cheap household goods and clothes, it provides jobs to those in need. They also run a food bank and, during the summer months, a farmers market!
And of course, they house bikers :-)
It's neat to see a church that is such an integral and active part of their community. They are clearly doing their best to share God's love with those around them.
Dubois is a pretty interesting little place. In addition to The Bull Elk Named Sue, the local laundromat is graced by a HUGE bison skull. We're talking a 20' tall skull that is standing up on end, nose to the ground in such a way that you have to walk through it to get to the door (not the main door to the laundromat though). Apparently it used to be a veterinarian's office.

Just down the street from that is a giant jackalope exhibit. If you don't know what a jackalope is, April says you're not American (or at least not a western American). It's a mythical creature that is a jackrabbit with antlers. For just one dollar, you can get your picture riding the giant jackalope located in the back of the gas station. We plan to take our picture on it before we leave. And finally, there is a random mine entrance just before the downtown!

The downtown has a warm, cozy, western feel to it and include historic Welty's General Store. Supposedly Butch Cassidy, or someone like that, shopped here at some point.

Also downtown, around the corner from The Opportunity Shop, is Karen's Coffee Haus and The Cowboy Cafe. We visited both, and both are great! April talked to Karen while I worked on the website and our trip log. She learned about running a coffee shop in a small tourist town. Pretty interesting stuff actually.
We had lunch at the Cowboy Cafe. I had a cheeseburger, fries and dessert. Since April hadn't been feeling good that morning, she just started with waffle fries, then added a burger, and then had part of my dessert!

After lunch, we looked around the Opportunity Shop a bit, then the outdoor gear store, and then went back to the church. While I worked on pictures and the website, April and Franklin (the dog) took a nap!

Then it was time to visit the bison skulled "laundromat" and wash our clothes. We decided that dessert at the Cowboy Cafe was so good that after we finished our laundry, we went back and had two more desserts!

While we were getting ready to order our desserts, someone said, "Well, hello there!" It was John and Robin from the Hatchet Campground! They had gone back to Teton National Park after camping at Hatchet and spent a night at Jenny Lake. Now they were on their way to Cheyenne and had stopped in Dubois for the night. We had a good conversation and then ordered (and scarffed down) our desserts.
Overall, it was a pretty relaxed day. It's amazing how many things there are to do on our to-do list! It sure doesn't take long to fall behind, but sometimes you just need to ignore the list for a bit and relax.
Our main bottle-neck is still only having one computer and having limited online time, but we're getting by ok...though we wouldn't say "no" to a netbook or two. ;-)
